Teacher-Naturalist

Position Summary

The Teacher Naturalist provides primary instruction to groups of middle grade or junior high students in a residential outdoor setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Leads hiking groups of students in the Redwood Forest and Stream/lake Watershed
• Uses multi-disciplinary learning activities such as scientific exploration, educational games and group discussion to teach environmental and social interaction concepts
• Uses group challenge activities to build a sense of cooperation and self-esteem
• Facilitates group social interaction activities and discussions
• Facilitates reflective activities
• Leads night hikes
• Provides supervision during student free time
• Leads large group evening activities
• Teaches arts and crafts, elective games and physical activities
• Aids in organizing and leading campfire songs, stories and activities
• Provides instruction in health and safety aspects of outdoor living
• Supervises students in group living activities, meals, clean up, etc.
• Responsible for directing mealtime activities
• Participates in fire drills
• Roves cabin area to provide supervision during night time
• Assists in training, community building and evaluation of Cabin Leaders
• Helps in implementing program changes
• Participates in self-evaluation and program evaluation
• Maintains on call status while in camp for emergency purposes

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Environmental Studies, Geography, Biology, Psychology, Sociology or related disciplines
• Experience working with children ages 10-14
• Experience working with children from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
• Interest and or experience problem solving with issues unique to children

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to hike 5+ hours daily
• Ability to work in a primarily outdoor environment

Benefits

Teacher Naturalist positions begin mid-January 2008 and end May 2008. Staff receives a monthly stipend along with room and board (meals provided during program weeks only). Medical benefits are also provided.

Leadership Supervisor

Position Summary

The Leadership Supervisor provides training, supervision, and mentorship to High School and adult Cabin Leaders in a residential outdoor setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Recruits, trains, supervises, mentors, and evaluates all Cabin Leaders.
• Travels around the greater San Francisco Bay Area in order to recruit and train volunteers
• Functions on-site as a co-director in the week-to-week programs
• Participates in camp administrative decisions
• Substitutes for Teacher Naturalists when they are off duty
• Provides supervision during student free time
• Leads large group evening activities
• Aids in organizing and leading campfire songs, stories and activities
• Roves cabin area to provide supervision during night time
• Maintains on call status while in camp for emergency purposes

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Environmental Studies, Psychology, Sociology or related disciplines
• Experience working with young adults ages 16-20
• Interest and or experience problem solving with issues unique to young adults

Other:

• Drivers License and a reliable form of transportation

Hero

Position Summary

The Caritas Creek Heroes serve as cabin leaders, mentors and role models to elementary and middle school students in a residential outdoor setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

• Provide live-in supervision for a student cabin group
• Supervise cabin group activities and cabin social environment
• Assure that cabin group honors the outdoor school schedule
• Act as lifeguards and lead electives when needed
• Role model appropriate behavior to campers
• Assist Teacher Naturalist on Exploration Hikes and during evening activities
• Supervise students during free time when assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED
• 21+ years of age
• Experience working with children ages 10-14
